Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge is 34,000 acres along Galveston Bay and along the Gulf of Mexico an hours drive from Houston.  It serves migratory birds coming and going across the Gulf of Mexico.

Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary's Rookery at High Island, outside of Houston TX is a favorite roosting and nesting place for summer herons, egrets and spoonbills particularly as a first stop after the long flight over the Gulf of Mexico.
